Scott B. Cooper is the founding and managing attorney at The Cooper Law Firm. Since 1999, he has fought for plaintiffs in class action lawsuits. He has had tremendous success achieving recoveries for his clients in both individual cases (representing one person or a few people) and class actions (representing hundreds or thousands of people at once). He has been appointed class counsel in over 50 class action cases, representing over 575,000 employees, and recovering over $200 million.
Mr. Cooper has devoted his career to litigation and has served as lead counsel and co-counsel on numerous jury trials, including cases against Wal-Mart, Ford, Continental General Tire, Toyota, the Department of Transportation, and major insurance companies. He has also negotiated many multi-million dollar settlements on behalf of his clients.
Immediately after graduating from law school in 1994, Mr. Cooper worked as a law clerk for United States District Court Judge Alicemarie H. Stotler in the Central District of California. He then began his law practice as a litigation associate with the international law firm of Latham & Watkins in its Orange County, California office. His practice at Latham & Watkins was focused primarily on complex commercial disputes and employment litigation in both state and federal courts until he left in 1999 to pursue cases exclusively on behalf of plaintiffs.
Mr. Cooper was named to the Southern California Rising Stars list from 2004 through 2009 and has been named to the Southern California Super Lawyers list in the category of Class Actions every year since he was first eligible for the honor in 2010 representing the top 2.5% of lawyers. He was also named a member of the Lawdragon 3000 Leading Plaintiffs’ Lawyers in America and is a member of the Multi-Million Dollar Advocates Forum.
Mr. Cooper is frequently asked to speak to attorney organizations and has done so on numerous topics relating to the litigation of tort cases and class actions. He has also co-authored a number of published articles on related topics.
Mr. Cooper is actively involved in bar associations and activities. He is a Past President of the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association, where he has served on the Board of Directors since 2004. He is also a past member of the Board of Governors for the Consumer Attorneys of California and a past member of the Board of Directors for the Orange County Bar Association. In the OCBA, he was Co-Chair of the Community Outreach Committee, in which he helped to plan that organization’s charitable activities, and served on the Judiciary Committee, Finance Committee, Appointments Committee, and Professionalism and Ethics Committee.
Mr. Cooper received his law degree with honors from the University of Chicago Law School in 1994. He received his bachelor’s degree in rhetoric with highest distinction (summa cum laude) from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991.
Mr. Cooper is a member of the State Bars of California and Georgia and is admitted to practice before the Ninth Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals; the Eleventh Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals; the United States District Courts for the Central, Northern, Southern and Eastern Districts of California; and the United States District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. He is also a member of the American Association for Justice (formerly the Association of Trial Lawyers of America), the Consumer Attorneys of California, and the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association.
Mr. Cooper lives in Irvine, California with his wife and their three children.
